The President on SOPA

Obama has come out against SOPA and PIPA, which is a really nice gesture, albeit possibly a cynical one. We are heading into an election season. He left the door open to reconsidering if some of the wording was changed. (or perhaps some of the timing…)

SOPA and PIPA both give large corporations and the Justice Department incredible power of the Internet and the marketplace. It would allow for stringent government censorship of the web, and could destroy the Internet as we know it. One reason the Internet works s well is because we can get to most of it and see almost all of it. Another reason the Internet works so well is because we can participate in it. This bill does really threaten to stop all of that.

Rupert Murdoch is very much in favor of SOPA, and he accused Obama of being in bed with silicon valley pirates for not supporting the bill. This is a bit rich coming from a man who is currently reviled throughout the British empire for the unethical tactics employed by his newspapers.

In the meantime, Wikipedia, reddit and boing boing are all going dark this coming Wednesday in protest of SOPA. These are the kinds of websites we stand to lose.
